We know Aliaksei Protas is on the vege of a great season especially after signing a midseason extension prior to the deadline. He finished this past season with six goals, 23 assists for 29 points in 78 games played. We know he's reliable now it's time for him to elevate his game as the Washington Capitals gear up for their 50th anniversary season.

Looking at more numbers, Protas had a 49.6 five on five shot attempt percentage, a 50.7 five on five expected goals for percentage and a 50 percent five on five actual goal percentage. He changed his jersey number from 59 to 21 and was in and out of the lineup early on in the season despite being good at five on five play.

Portas signed a contract extension in January worth $3.4 million. After signing the deal he said:

""It's a big honor. I'm so proud. This team, this organization believed in me. They give me chance to chase my dreams and to reach my dream to play in the NHL. They trust me, they support me, and that's a really big one for me. Now I just have to keep working even harder to prove that I deserve to wear this jersey every night.""

Natural Stat Trick

Protas' advanced numbers continued to tell a different story than the basic stats. He finished with a corsi for percentage of 48.65 percent, a 50.91 percent expected goals for percentage, and a 50.71 percent high danger chances for percentage.

A different take

Peter Hassett of RMNB wrote a season review of Protas recently and like us, he's optimistic about Protas and it's now up to the prospect turned pro no pun intended to prove himself.

""I've been optimistic about Protas for two years now, but I'm here still hoping he's on the verge of a breakthrough. We saw a glimpse of it in his offense - he led the team in initial-assist rate, more than tripling his most common comparator, Tom Wilson. "

Final Grade B-: Protas' advanced stats are beyond average but he needs to up his point production for a higher grade next season.
