Breaking down Logan Thompson's cool mask design
With 48 days until the season let's break down the awesomeness of Logan Thompson's mask
Don't let the above pic fool you Washington Capitals fans. Logan Thompson looks better rocking the red especially with the Abe Lincoln statue backdrop that is on his goalie helmet.
Additionally there was a hint drop on Instagram from Logan Thmpson's mask designer hat the Caps will have a retro alternate jersey.
After some positive feedback on the mask design @friedesigns, the maker of the mask said this:
"Nice thanks guys!! Got a home mask coming soon and a awesome retro for their alternate!!"
There's a Screaming Eagle and a regular Caps logo on one side. Honest Abe is on the back side. And the blockers and glove have a retro red, white and blue feel which is perfect as the franchise celebrates 50 years of Caps hockey.
Thompson was traded to the Caps by the Vegas Golden Knights on draft day ironically at Las Vegas in The Sphere. He's expected to compete with Charlie Lindgren in a 1A vs. 1B in goalie this season and Thompson has one year left on his current contract.
He literally went from signing autographs with fans casually to saying goodbye to the Vegas fans and hello to the red clad Caps fans that were in attendance.
I think what's going to end up happening with the goalie situation is this. I think there won't be a competition. That doesn't necesaraily mean the opening night spot in the cage is sealed necessarily. I see it more as Charlie Lindgren and Thompson having the chance to push each other to be as elite as possible.
Let's hover over the numbers real fast. Lindgren finished 25-16-7 with six shutouts, a 2.67 goals against average and a .911 save percentage while Thompson finished last season with a 25-14-5 record with one shutout, a 2.70 goals against average and a .908 save percentage.
Perhaps if there's one big thing both goalies bring to the table that the Caps haven't had in years past is actual stability in net. It would be nice to go through a season without worrying about who's in net. It would be even more fun to have a debate about it and if both goalies bring their A game it'll be a hot question all winter long.
