The Washington Capitals are reportedly sending Darcy Kuemper to the Los Angeles Kings for Pierre-Luc Dubois, Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reported along with Elliotte Friedman. No salary is retained for either side. The Caps would later confirm the news in a press release.
What the Caps are losing
On the stat sheet not too much. Kuemper went 13-14-3 with one shutout, a 3.31 goals against average and a .890 save percentage. In his two seasons in Washington he went 35-40-10 with a 3.03 GAA and a .902 save percentage. But Darcy Kuemper the person is a good guy, a dad, a husband, and a dog owner. He was a big part of the community and was still supportive of Charlie Lindgren even as he lost the starter's job late in the season.
What the Caps are gaining
Let's let General Manager Brian MacLellan do the talking from the press release:
""We are thrilled to announce the addition of Pierre Luc-Dubois to the Caps organization. This acquisition brings in a 25 year old with immense potential to become a top-tier center in the NHL. With his size, exceptional skating, and high hockey IQ, we are confident he will thrive in our organization with increased responsibility and opportunity.""Brian MacLellan
GMBM also added this about Kuemper:
""We also thank Darcy for his valuable contributions to our organization on and off the ice and wish him the best in Los Angeles. After witnessing Charlie Lindgren's performance last season, we believe he deserves a chance to play a more significant role within our team.""GMBM
Dubois recorded 40 points with 16 goals and 24 assists in 82 games with LA last season. The six foot four, 225 pound forward ranked tied for third on the Kings in power play goals with seven, seventh in goals, and eighth in points. During the 2022-23 season, Dubois established career highs in assists with 36, points with 63 and power play points with 23 in 73 games with the Winnipeg Jets.
Additionally he can score in the playoffs. Dubois has recorded 27 points in 43 Stanley Cup playoff games with 11 goals and 16 assists. He was orginally drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets as the third overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. Overall this was a good trade and I think this will help up the center position.
