Breaking down the potential third defensive pairing of the 2024-25 Washington Capitals
Today we look at Martin Fehervary and Trevor van Riemsdyk
Next up on our Washington Capitals preseason outlook we break down the potential third defensive pairing of Martin Fehervary and Trevor van Riemsdyk with training camp coming up next week and rookie camp coming up this weekend.
The basics
Fehervary had three goals and 13 assists for 16 points while in the playoffs added two goals and one assist for three points. After deaiing with injuries he was back on the ice working out with the team as recently as Friday which is good news on the health front. TvR had 14 assists in 70 games and appeared in three playoff games.
Advanced stats
Fehervary had a corsi for percentage of 47.27 percent, an expected goals for percentage of 45.65 percent and a high danger chances for percentage of 48.96 percent. TvR had a 46.74 percent corsi for percentage, a 50.79 percent expected goals for percentage and a 52.32 percent high danger chances for during the regular season per Natural Stat Trick.
In the playoffs Fehervary had a corsi for percentage of 43.38 percent, an expected goals for percentage of 40.62 percent, and a high danger chances for percentage of 39.13 percent. As for TvR his cosi for percentage was at 46.88 percent, his expected goals for percentage was at 50.60 percent and his high danger chances for percentage was at 45.45 percent.
When they were paired together in the regular season their combined corsi for percentage was at 47.66 percent, their expected goals for percentage was at 50.67 percent and their high danger chances for was at 51.16 percent.
Fehervary and TvR are pretty much all but a lock to make that third defensive pairing and are much more experienced than Alex Alexeyev and Vincent Iorio who I believe still need more time in their development.
We're anticipating them to shore up the defense once again and hope for the health as the Caps look to compete in a Metropolitan Division that got better over the summer.
Both aren't quite known for providing offense to their game like other defensemen we've mentoned in previous articles but they can handle the defensive workload which is pretty much what Spencer Carbery is asking for this season.
