Breaking down the upcoming Capitals Street Hockey Extravaganza
The Washington Capitals today announced a cool youth initiative
On Wednesday morning the Washington Capitals announced the Capitals Street Hockey Extravaganza which will be a youth ball hockey tournament taking place on Nov. 16 at George Mason's Eagle Bank Arena to in conjunction with 50 years of Capitals Hockey.
This event will pay tribute to the Capitals original Sreet Hockey Extravaganza tournaments which took place in the 1970s.
Per Capitals PR on Twitter/X, in the 1970s the Caps made their mark on growing the game by hosting the largest street hockey clinic in existence: the Capitals Youth Hockey Extravaganza.
In 1975, more than 2,000 boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 14 played in 50 simultanous street hockey games at the Capital Centre in Maryland.
Participants were bussed from across Prince George's County after the Capitals and the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Comission teamed up for a summer street hockey program to celebrate the growing intreet in street and ice hockey in the region.
The Caps continued hosting the event throughout the 1970s and would eventually extend the invite to all children in the Washington, D.C. region.
The Caps Youth Hockey Nov. 16 tournament is for 12 through 14 year olds and intrested parties can register as a team or an individual for placement on a team by the Capitals. 14 teams will play four games each from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and prior hockey experience is not required.

This appears to be a cool event. Like we've said the Caps are going big this season when it comes to celebrating 50 years and this community program that's free to those who register is another opportunity for the team to grow the game in a fast DMV region.
The Ovi effect is as real as it gets. Kids every day want to be like their heroes and don't be surprised to see some Ovechkin like cellys if you sign your kid up.
