Opponent breakdown
Philadelphia Flyers: This is a rivalry in itself. Both division and geographically. The Caps won the season series last season two games out of three and clinched the series and a playoff spot in Philly so expect some revenge and bad blood even if it's the preseason. The one loss to the Flyers came in the shootout which was also in Philly.
Boston Bruins: Another team the Caps had to plow through to get to the playoffs. The Caps took two out of three in that series as well. The Caps won at Boston 3-0 back on Feb. 10 which helped launch their season turnaround. A close loss to them scared many in late March but the Caps would bounce back two weeks later right before the season ended when they needed to win out.
New Jersey Devils: Another heavyweight favorite but more towards last preseason. They too have made some moves this offseason. Last season the Caps won three out of four games and that included both games in the Garden State. Both of them were good early season wins that helped keep the Caps in the race.
Columbus Blue Jackets: The Caps clean sweeped the Blue Jackets winning all three games including an overtime winner from Alex Ovechkin.
