Joel Edmundson Final 2023-24 Capitals Report Card
We have to grade everybody including the ones that left before the trade deadline
The Washington Capitals had a variety of players come and go throughout the 2023-24 season. One player of note that got dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs prior to the deadline was defenseman Joel Edmundson. He was brought in via a trade from the Montreal Canadiens at the start of free agency a summer ago.
He was supposed to make the lineup as a veteran defensman but the 30 year old got hurt in an intrasquad scrimmage prior to the Capitals preseason opener against the Buffalo Sabres and didn't suit up in a game until Nov. 18 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
In 44 games with the Caps the defenseman finished with one goal and five assists for six points with a career low 19 penalty minutes and a plus/minus of -5.
With Toronto
Edmundson played in nine games with the Maple Leafs and went scoreless. In the playoffs he had one assist in seven games as the Leafs bowed out to the Boston Bruins, who are up against the Florida Panhters tonight.
Advanced Stats with Caps
Edmundson finished with a 47.69 percent corsi for percentage per Natural Stat Trick as well as a 46.79 percent expected goals for percentage and a 52.34 high danger chances for percentage.
Final Capitals Grade C+: Edmundson had some good advanced stats and was reliable when he wasn't injured. His time with the Caps was short lived as the Caps made another deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs for the second straight year.
The return is a third round pick in this year's NHL Draft and a fifth rounder in next year's draft. The fact GMBM was able to fleece the Leafs for the second year in a row should be appluaded. This was a good trade and Edmundson still ended up with a good grade.
