By now you know we've reached the point in the offseason where we hand out player grades to everyone significant Washington Capitals player that contributed to the lineup this past season. Next up is Mike Sgarbossa, who split time with both the Capitals in the NHL and the AHL's Hershey Bears who are still playing for you know what.
This past season looking at the basic numbers, Sgarbossa suited up for 25 Caps games and recorded four goals and three assists for seven points. That includes a game winning goal and an average ice time of 10:58. His last goal came in a tough shootout loss to the Boston Bruins but the Caps would get payback weeks later to punch their ticket to the postseason.
Advanced stats
Sgarbossa had good advanced stats at the NHL level from the small sample size of 25 games. Per Natural Stat Trick, he had a corsi for percentage of 48.19 percent, a 51.10 percent expected goals for percentage, and a 47.37 high danger chances for percentage.
His speed was also just below the league average per NHL Edge. Sgarbossa's top skatiing speed in miles per hour clocked out to 21.80 with 29 speed bursts over 20 miles per hour in a 48.72 skating distance. His top shot speed came out to 80.64 miles per hour with 27 shots on goal and a 14.8 percent shooting percentage.
With the Hershey Bears
The Hershey Bears currently lead the best of seven Eastern Conference Finals of the Calder Cup playoffs two games to none over the Cleveland Monsters thanks to back to back overtime victories at a noisy GIANT Center with packed crowds both nights and all throghout the playoff run.
In the regular season which saw Hershey come out with the AHL's best record, Sgarbossa had 43 points in 44 games with seven goals and 36 assists. The center is ineligible for the playoffs due to not being placed on waivers before the trade deadline.
Final Grade C: Sgarbossa did all he had to do in the regular season with the Bears and when his name was called up with the Caps. So this is a final Caps and his Bears grade will come at a later date.
