Offseason Grades for the Capitals: Rating Every Trade, Signing and More
Now that the silly season has subsided it's time to take a look aback
The Washington Capitals made a flurry of trades, no pun indended, over their draft weekend. Let's grade each one which turned out to be the final benchmark of the Brian MacLellan era.
Logan Thompson
Logan Thompson was acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights on June 29 and attended the Caps Development Camp in 2018 and 2019. Thompson appeared in 32 games with the Caps ECHL affiliate the South Carolina Stingrays during the 2019-20 season before joining Vegas as a free agent. Thompson went on to win the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award as the AHL's outstanding goaltendeer in the 2020-21 season with the Henderson Silver Knights. He has a record of 56-32-11 with a 2.67 goals against average, a .912 save percentage and four shutouts.
Grade A: This is a great way to complement Charlie Lindgren in case the assumed to be starter struggles.
Pierre Luc-Dubois
Pierre Luc-Dubois was traded for Darcy Kuemper who was overpaid and just simply didn't perform the way we had hoped he would two years ago. Fans are hoping he can provide a jolt for Alex Ovechkin, who texted GMBM a big thumbs up when the trade happeend.
Grade B: While we aren't sure what to expect, we've seen what a change of scenery does for players. Here's hoping the Caps can provide that 1-2 punch whether they play on the same line or not.
Brandon Duhaime
Brandon Duhaime signed as a free agent for a two year deal. The right winger had five goals and eight assists for 13 points in 80 games. He also added a goal and four asissts for five points in this year's Stanley Cup playoffs and in 2023-24 had four goals and four assists for an Ovi eight points while with Minnesota.
Grade B: Like we said we aren't sure what we'll get but if he contributes then it works.
Taylor Raddysh
Taylor Raddyish signed as a free agent to a one year deal from the Chicago Blackhawks family. Last season he had five goals and nine assists for 14 points while recording 20 goals and 17 assists for 37 points the season before. This kid won't turn 27 until February.
Grade B+: It's a flashy name and we think he can bring that to the lineup in a new city like DC.
Connor McMichael
Connor McMichael was re-upped to a two year extension which was indeed the right call.
Grade A+
Matt Roy
Matt Roy signed on as a free agent to shore up the defense. He;s from the Kings and recorded five goals and 20 assists for 25 points last season.
Grade A
Jakob Chychrun
This was a trade by Mac as Nick Jensen was dealt along with a third rounder. He recorded 14 goals and 27 assists for 41 points last season for the Ottawa Senators.
