The Washington Capitals season is inching closer and to celebrate 50 years we've put together a list of the top 5 point getters from this past season. For this exercise we included players that played a majority of the season. We had to take Anthony Mantha out of the equation as he got traded to the Vegas Golden Knights mid season.

Mantha did have a good season, however, under year one of the Spencer Carbery expiriment. 20 goals and 14 assists for 34 points will do that to up the trade value and that trade turned into backup goalie Logan Thompson to compliment Charlie Lindgren. At least that's our way too early prediction right now.

Dylan Strome

Dylan Strome led the way for the Caps with 27 goals and 40 assists for 67 points. 21 of those goals came at even strength while the other six came from the power play. So the center was always reliable whenever his name was called whether it was an injury to Nicklas Backstrom, top line assignments with Alex Ovechkin.

Per Natural Stat Trick, Strome's corsi for percentage finished at 51.14 percent, his expected goals for percentage at 53.52 percent and his high danger chances for percentage at 54.43 percent at five on five in the regular season. On a line with Alex Ovechkin, his corsi for percentage was at 51.68 which is an improvment from the 50.59 percent that he isn't.

Alex Ovechkin

Shocker a list where Alex Ovechkin actually finishes second. 31 goals and 34 assists for 65 points. 13 of those 31 goals came on the power play. Like Stromer, Ovi finished with five game winning goals and so did John Carlson.

Per Natural Stat Trick, Ovechkin finished with a corsi for percentage of 47.98 percent, an expected goals for percentage of 45.98 percent and a high danger chances for percentage of 48.98 percent. When he was with T.J. Oshie their combined corsi was at 43.91 percent but their high danger chances for was at 48.15 percent.

Sharing a line with Alex Ovechkin is no easy task so let's throw John Carlson into the equation ust for gee wiz. Their combined corsi for was at 51.06 percent, their expected goals for percentage was at 49.63 percent and their high danger chances for percentage came out to 52.55 percent.

When Tom Wilson is to Ovechkin's right, the pair combined for a corsi for percentage of 50.24 percent and their high danger chances for percentage was at 48.36 percent. But without Wilson on the same line, Wilson's corsi is at 50.34 percent while his high danger chances for catapults to 54.17 percent.

Tom Wilson

Ah yes Tom Wilson he was fourth on the Caps in points this season with 35 with 18 goals and 17 assists. Per Natural Stat Trick his regular season corsi for percentage was at 50.29 percent. His expeced goals for percentage was at 50.03 percent while his high danger chances for percentage was at 50.92 percent.

In the playoffs against the Rangers Wilson's corsi for percentage was at 53.85 percent his expected goals for percentage was at 63.55 percent and his high danger chances for came out to 68.75 percent.

Wilson also led the Caps in hits with 288 in the regular season. In the playoffs he had a goal and two assists for three points which led all forwards in the short lived series. He also had a hat trick over the holidays in Anaheim further cementing his legacy as a potential future team captain.

John Carlson

John Carlson had 10 goals and 42 assists for 52 points as he too like T.J. Oshie, reached the 1,000 game plateau. In all, Carlson played in 1,009 games recording 151 goals and 523 assists for 674 points. In the regular season Carlson's corsi for percentage was at 47.52 percent while his expected goals for percentage was at 48.76 percent.

In the playoffs, Carlson's corsi for percentage came out to 53.80 percent, his high danger chances for percentage came out to 60 percent. He was on fire in the playoffs sort of speak. And that is no easy feat especially for the veteran who was drafted in the first round by the Capitals in 2008, the same year Braden Holtby was drafted.

The other hard job was being John Carlson's defensive partner as you've seen in our player report cards that we've done throughout the offseason. Still, there's more to this story that we don't know and the one hot question on everybody's mind is whether or not Carlson will be healthy for another season.

In the regular season at five on five his corsi for percentage was at 46.95 percent, his expected goals for percentage came out to 48.25 percent and his high danger chances for percentage came out to 49.10 percent per Natural Stat Trick.

When McMichael centered a line with Tom Wilson and Alex Ovechkin, their combined corsi for percentage was at 47.76 percent. When McMichael was together with just Wilson it clocked out to 52.55 percent. Then when it was just McMichael and Ovechkin together it was a combined corsi for percentage of 46.76 percent.

In the playoffs McMichael added a goal further earning that two year extension. His corsi for was at 46.88 percent but his high danger chances for plummented to 33.33 percent.

In the end, the Capitals and McMichael agreed to a two year, $4.2 million extension.
