The Washington Capitals indeed weren't done when they finished drafting in Las Vegas. Now it's the fun part of the offseason where the wheeling and the dealings happen. Here's what the Caps have done so far:
Today Bears fans can rejoice because the team re-signed fellow Calder Cup champions Ethen Frank, Mitch Gibson and Chase Priskie. The Caps also re-signed Connor McMichael to a two year deal that he earned after setting career highs in goals, assists, and points last season. That contract will carry an AAV of $2.1 million, per the Caps and Brian MacLellan.
At just 23 and still growing, McMichael recorded 33 points in 80 games this past season with 18 goals and 15 assists. 15 of McMichael's 18 goals came at even strength and was one of just four Caps players who played in at least 80 games.
McMichael played a total of 45 seconds on the penalty kill in 75 career games prior to the start of last season. He ranked fifth in shorthanded ice time per game among Capitals forwards and tied for the team lead in shorthanded points with two. The shorthanded ice time clocked out to 1:20 seconds per game.
McMichael re-signed improves team speed
At five on five only Dylan Strome (72) generated more high danger scoring chances for than McMichael (69) among Caps skaters. During the Caps first round series against the New York Rangers, McMichael scored a goal and ranked second on the team in shots with 13.
Obviously you want to see center depth like McMichael and Strome on your team. When the Caps signed Strome a couple years ago he brought the team speed with him from the Chicago Blackhawks.
The Bears depth signings
Ethen Frank: The 26 year old scored 47 points in 64 games with 29 goals and 18 assists with the Bears this past season. He led the team in goals, power play goals with 13 and game winning goals with 19.
Mitchell Gibson: The goaltender posted a record of 2-0-0 with a 1.92 goals against average and a .915 save percentage in two games with Herhsey last season.
Frank's deal is a two year contract that's two way this upcoming season and one way in 2025-26. Gibson's is a one year two way deal while Chase Priskie is a one year, two way, per the Bears.
The Caps also hit the trade market acquiring defenseman Jakob Chychrun from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Nick Jensen. They also added Matt Roy to the mix on the blue line.
