Washington Capitals News: Evgeny Kuznetsov wants to see Alex Ovechkin break the record plus more tributes to Johnny
September is here which means training camp and the season is just around the corner
The Washington Capitals season is coming very soon and yesterday we learned that former Caps center Evgeny Kuznetsov would like to see Alex Ovechkin break the record not just for obvious reasons but also so that it is finally off his plate.
Chris Cerullo of RMNB wrote about how Kuzy played a KHL preseason tournament game with SKA Saint Petersburg. The 32 year old had a good response to Russian news outlet Ivestia saying via Google Translate:
"I think so, I hope so. So that he won't suffer anymore next year."
Suffering refers to pressure. It is something that every great athlete in the history of sports has ever faced. All the greats from Tom Brady, to Kobe Bryant, to Michael Jordan were each their own personality. The NHL has that with Ovi and he can score goals like no other as we all know best.
Ovechkin has been asked about it and responds in his typical Ovi fashion. He said to Sport24's Andrey Babich
"Talk about the chase? I'm already used to it. I don't play attention. I need to go out, do my job, and that's it."
"Personally, I'm not interested in (talk about about the goals record) at all."
Ovechkin is set to arrive to training camp this month at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. Meanwhile we are still mourning the sad loss of Johnny Gaudreau as the hockey community continues to rally on social media.
Teams in Philadephia, Ohio, and Calgary all held moments of silence for Johnny and his brother Matthew after their tragic death and so did Capitals players past and present.
Andrew Mangiapane, who the Caps acquired this offseason was probably the closest to Gaudreau after playing five seasons with the seven time all star as a member of the Calgary Flames, writing on his Instagram, "There are no words, we're all going to miss you. Love you little guy."
Recently, per Ian Oland of RMNB, Ryan Leonard and Charlie Lidngren were teammates of Gaudreau internationally at the 2024 IIHF World Championship in Czechia where Johnny Hockey became the USA's all time leading point scorer with 43. Sadly they got eliminated in the quarterfinals by Czechia who went on to win the tournament.
