Who led the Capitals in penalty minutes in 2023-24?

The Washington Capitals will be celebrating their 50th anniversary season in 2023-24 which is a big milestone for both the team and the franchise. For the newcomers welcome aboard and if you're a long timer you know we have to answer some burning questions. Today's topic is who led the Caps in penalty minutes.

Who has the most penalties in minutes?

The leader was none other than Tom Wilson who racked up 133 penalty minutes. Following Wilson was Nic Dowd with 47 then T.J. Oshie with 44. John Carlson had 40.

As far as others go Connor McMichael had 34 penalty minutes, Max Pacioretty had 25 and so did Beck Malenstyn. Rasmus Sandin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Martin Fehervary each had 24. Nicolas Aube-Kubel had 23. Dylan Strome had 22. Alex Ovechkin had 20.

Now for the bottom half of this list. Joel Edmundson had 19, Trevor van Riemsdyk had 18, Anthony Mantha had 17. Sonny Milano, Nick Jensen and Ethan Bear eahc had 10. Aliaksei Protas had eight. Ivan Miroshnichenko and Alex Alexeyev each had six.

Now we're getting to the Bears and younger part of the lineup. Dylan McIlrath had five penalty minutes while Hendrix Lapierre and Lucas Johansen each had four. Michael Sgarbossa, Nicklas Backstrom Hardy Haman Aktell and Pierrick Dube all had two.

This shouldn't surprise those who are old timers and watch Caps games night after night but for the newbies learning the sport it's a good refresher course on this hot summer day wherever you are. In fact if you're new to the sport and a female the Caps offered the perfect opportunity.

For the second year in a row the team is doing their annual DMV Girls Try Hockey For Free Day in DC, Maryland and Virginia on Saturday September 14. Per the press release it's a joint effort between the Caps, the Monumental Sports and Entertainment Foundation, the Potomac Valley Amateur Hockey Association (PVAHA), and various youth hockey organizations throughout the region to introduce girls ages 4-9 to the beautiful game.
