The Washington Capitals announced that forward T.J. Oshie will make a special announcement on Monday, June 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the Washington Harbour in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C.
The date happens to be on the anniversary of Oshie and the rest of the team swimming in the fountains just days after winning the Stanley Cup.
This special event is open to all fans, taking place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oshie will speak to the crowd at 5:30 and there will be a Q and A session with Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin. The event is free to attend.
If this is what we think it is, we congratulate Oshie on a legendary career. He was traded to the Capitals in the summer of 2015, and it was a perfect match.
Oshie would appear in 1,010 career games between the Washington Capitals and St. Louis Blues. He has 302 career goals and 393 assists for 695 points throughout his career.
Oshie spent last season on long term injured reserve and didn't play at all. His final season of game action would turn out to be the 2023-24 season where he had 12 goals and 13 assists for 25 points.
But when Oshie was traded to the Capitals for Troy Brouwer in the summer of 2015, it gave the Caps some much-needed additional scoring in the top six from someone other than Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom.
Oshie saw instant regular-season success as the Caps captured two straight Presidents' Trophies. Those seasons saw Oshie put up 26 goalsin his first season in DC and 33 the next.
The 33-goal season was enough to get a contract extension that ran through this past season, so yeah, we anticipate an emotional annoucement coming up.
After signing a contract in the summer of 2017 for an extension, Oshie would help the Caps to their first Stanely Cup. Without that extension on Oshie, I don't think there's a Cup.
That spring saw Oshie score eight goals and add 13 assists for 21 points. Even though that would be the only Cup Oshie would win, he was a vital player in that Cup run and helped keep the locker room loose.
Oshie wears emotion and heart on his sleeve. He is a spark plug to a lineup and brings life to the party wherever he is. He will certainly be missed if he is indeed deciding to hang up his skates.
