We talk a lot about what the Washington Capitals do on the ice and so far they've won games, a good amount, in 2024. They even made the playoffs. But in this article we picked three off ice stories that helped shape the team this season.

#3 The upcoming Capital One Arena revival

We have to start here because it's not only off ice but shapes the future of the franchise and the city of Washington, D.C. Just before the holidays, Ted Leonsis unveiled this spectacular project. Here's the inspiration for the design:

"Reimagining a Civic Legacy: Inspired by the L'Enfant Plan developed in 1791 for the District, the project expands on the historic node of the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture (commonly known as the Smithsonian's Portrait Gallery, located next door o the arena). The architectural redesign visually transforms the arena into a dynamic and monumental gathering location, honoring it's role as a central meeting space in the District's original plan. "

#2 Capitals surprise original season ticket holders in honor of 50th Anniversary

In early October the entire Capitals roster including captian Alex Ovechkin surprised original season ticket holders by not only delivering their season tickets but also a commemorative gift to the elite 36 who have been there since day one.

The ticket delivery came right after the team's closed practice at Capital One Arena as they were in preparation for the new season. These elite 36 like we said have been there with the team since 1974-75 so bravo to the guys for this epic surprise for them.

#1 Rising Stars Academy Fundraiser

In the summer the Greene brothers held a fundraising event to raise money for the Capitals Rising Stars Academy. Jack Connor of WashCaps.com talked about it and spoke with Zave (20), Jovi (17) and Tyvan (12) in an article.

Here's what Zave said on why they chose the Rising Stars Academy as their beneficiary:

"So many talented young athletes with big hockey dreams face obstacles getting on the ice. Rising Stars Academy is a direct way to help these passionate players work toward their dreams, regardless of their financial situation. The game of hockey changes lives, and supporting young athletes pursuing their dreams feels incredibly rewarding. "
