Strome was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes 3rd overall in the 2015 NHL entry draft, before he was traded to Chicago in in 2018-19. Strome was productive but had troble staying healthy and Chicago decided not to tender him a qualifying offer after the 2021-22. Strome became a free agent and signed with the Caps for one year, who then extended him to a 5 year deal $25 million contract in the middle of his first season in Washington.

Strome played in 81 games for the Caps that first year and has since played in at least 80 games four years in a row. During his first four seasons, he has scored 58 points or more. Last season, his 82 points were a career high and tied him 20th in league scoring with Brayden Point ($9.5 million per year), Zach Werenski ($9.5 million), and 34 year-old Matt Duschene ($4.5 million). Strome has the best value contract on the Caps, and with a bounce back year likely with the Capitals new additions at forward.
