The Washington Capitals rallied in the third period to beat the Montreal Canadiens to remain the hottest team in the NHL and they did it 24 hours after besting the Toronto Maple Leafs on their back to back Canada weekend tour. Igniting that comeback was none other than the best goal scorer in the NHL in Tom Wilson, in our opinion besides the Great Eight.
Wilson scored twice in the third to give the Caps the win 4-2 which marked their league leading 11th come from behind win this season and extended their franchise road winning streak to nine games. Per NHL Stats, the Capitals became the third team in NHL history to earn wins in nine consecutive road wins all in regulation joining the 1983-84 San Jose Sharks and the Los Angeles Kings from Oct. to Nov. 2023.
Wilson upped his point total to 22 points in 27 games with 11 goals and 11 assists. He has a plus/minus of +6. He also has three game winning goals to boot. But also in the third period he took a shot to the face from teammate Jakob Chychrun. Despite the accident, Wilson would finish the game.
Logan Thompson, who started in net and got the win for D.C. cracked some jokes about it after the game to Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post:
"Good thing Tom has a big head. ...You can hardly notice."Logan Thompson
Dylan Strome, who also scored in the contest would even add that Wilson would come back to the bench looking "bigger than normal".
Here's Wilson's interview with Hockey Night in Canada with Shawn McKenzie of Sportsnet where you can be the judge of Willy's face from the shot.
"It's my first time seeing it on the screen. It doesn't look so hot here but you know what I think my dad always told me if you're good to play, you play so went to the room, got checked out, felt good enough to get back out there. It's a team sport. The boys rallied and got it done. "Tom Wilson
Finally here are the goals Wilson scored to both tie the game and give the Caps the lead for good.
Per Caps PR, Wilson reached the 10 and 11 goal mark for the 27th game and it marked the third time in his career he reached at least the 10 goal mark. Wilson's second goal came 4:38 after the game tying goal marking his third muti goal game of the season and his second in his last five games. The three Wilson game winning goals are ranked tied with Alex Ovechkin for second on the team and one behind Connor McMichael.
