The Washington Capitals have drafted a number of centers in their 52 years history, but these five were by far the best.

4. Michael Pivonka 1984 - (3rd Round 59th, overall)

Michael Pivonka story is right out of Cold War thriller. After secret meetings with Caps scout Jack Button in a Swedish hunting lodge, Pivonka and his fiancé defected from Czechoslovakia in 1986. “Pivo” made an immediate impact in the Capitals lineup, scoring 43 points in 73 games his rookie year. Pivonka struggled with consistency for the next few seasons until 1990 when he was paired with rookie winger Peter Bondra. Pivo and “Bonzai” led the Capitals in scoring for the next seven years. Pivonka played his last game and on April 1999, after being slowed by injuries. He finished 13 year career with 181 goals, 418 assists for 559 career points in 825 games, all with the Washington Capitals.
