The Washington Capitals downed the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 to improve their record to 32-10-5 which is good for 69 points. Logan Thompson got the win in net to improve his record to improve his record to 22-2-3 with a 2.09 goals against average and a .925 save percentage. His save percentage on the night finished up at .938.
Leon Draisaitl struck first for the Oilers for his 34th goal of the season at 3:02. At 9:01 Tom Wilson would tie it with his 20th after he finished off a two on one feed from Aliaksei Protas. Protas added his 20th assist of the season while John Carlson had he secondary for his 25th of the season.
1-1 would be the score after one with Edmonton leading in shots 10-3. For Wilson, he reached the 20 goal mark for he fourth time in his career. He also did it in 2021-22 wih 24 goals, 2018-19 with 22 goals and 2019-20 with 20. He scored his 20th goal in his 47th game of the season which is the fastest time he reached the 20 goal mark in his career.
For Protas he reached the 20 assist mark for the second consecutive season after he had 23 last season. Carlson continues to lead defensemen in assists as he tacked on his 25th.
Also after the first period Washington had the edge in face off percentage 70 perent to 30 percent while the Oilers had one takeaway. The Caps had the edge in blocked shots by a 4-2 advanage and no penalties were taken in the first period.
Matt Roy would make the score 2-1 at 8:14 with the slap shot. Pierre-Luc Dubois and Connor McMichael had the assists, PLD with his 29th and McMichael with his 18th. They took the 2-1 lead into the third period despite being outshot 16-6.
In the third the Caps were outshot 6-5 and 32-14 overall but Thompson would make 30 of those saves. Pierre-Luc Dubois put an exclamation point on the game with his ninth goal of the season at 3:49. That was set up by Lars Eller for his eighth and Thompson for his first assist on the year.
Corey Perry tacked on another for the Oilers for his eighth of the year at 4:50 but the Caps would hang on for the rest of the way. The next time these two teams meet will be on Feb. 23rd at Capital One Arena.
