Washington Capitals end road trip with overtime loss to Ottawa Senators

The Washington Capitals suffered a rare loss to end the month of January but still came away with one point against the Ottawa Senators

The Washington Capitals put up a good fight but came away with a 5-4 road loss to the Ottawa Senators. The first period was scoreless as the Caps were outshot 11-7. In the second Caps were outshot 14-12 and the goals started coming.

Ridly Greig struck on the power play at 4:08 for his eighth goal of the season. Washington answered at 7:43 with a goal from Connor McMichael for his 18th of the season. Pierre-Luc Dubois had the primary assist for his 30th helper while Matt Roy added his 10th. Josh Norris then struck for Ottawa at 17:37 shorthanded for his 18th then Shane Pinto added his 10th of the season on a shorthander of his own at 18:15.

In the third period the Caps cut it to one with a power play goal from Dylan Strome at 7:58 for his 14th of the season. John Carlson would add his 27th assist on the season while Alex Ovechkin picked up his 13th.

Jake Sanderson would answer with a power play strike for his third goal of the season at 10:38. Then Alex Ovechkin scored his 23rd goal of the season on the power play at 13:01 as Aliaksei Protas added his 22nd assist while Connor McMichael picked up his 20th. Ovechkin is now 19 away from passing Wayne Gretzky for the most NHL goals of all time.

The Caps would tie the game at four apiece at 14:31 with Strome's 15th of the season. Ovechkin notched his 14th apple while Tom Wilson had his 16th and it would help the Caps come away with at least one point. Washington led in shots 13-7 in the third.

Shots were even at two in overtime whlle the Caps had the edge in shots 35-34 overall. Thomas Chabot scored in overtime at 1:46 with his fourth of the season to seal the game for Ottawa and give them two points against a very good Washington team.

On Saturday Feb. 1 the Caps return home to host the Winnipeg Jets with puck drop at 7 p.m. on Monumental Sports Network and NHL Network.
