The Washington Capitals could not get a third period equalizer as they fell 4-2 and the Minnesota Wild completed the regular season sweep.
Couldn't get the equalizer but a cool moment for Alex Ovechkin and Marc-Andre Fleury after the game
Jon Merrill struck first for the Wild at the six minute mark. Matt Roy would tie it with his third goal of the season at 7:08. Taylor Raddysh notched his 20th assist while Lars Eller added his 12th.
The Caps went up 2-1 at 8:49 with Brandon Duhaime's ninth of the season. Nic Dowd and Anthony Beauvillier had the assists with their 12th and 10th, respectively.
2-1 would be the score after one with shots even at eight apiece. In the second period Frederick Gaudreau struck on the power play at 12:25 then at 19:51, Matt Boldy would give the Wild the lead for good. Gaudreau put it away with an empty net goal at 18:39 in the final period.
Caps led in shots 13-6 in the second and 9-7 in the third and overall 30-21. Although Marc-Andre Fleury didn't get to face Alex Ovechkin, Ovi made sure his teammates paid their respect to the longtime goaltender as he had his teammates line up for a playoff style handshake line.

Charlie Lindgren would make 17 saves in the defeat. Ovechkin remains six goals away from passing Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record with 10 games to go this season. Spencer Carbery spoke to the media following the game:
"The margin for error in these games is very, very thin... They score on the power play, we don't, so there's one tilted situation. They score at the end of the period at just a little bit of a situation where we lose focus, there you go. So now you're down a goal, and now you've got to rely on someone to make a big play. We just didn't do that. We had enough chances. We got ourselves into some good situations. We just didn't finish. "Spencer Carbery
Next up for the Capitals is a Sunday afternoon home game against the Buffalo Sabres at 3 p.m. You can catch the game on Monumental Sports Network as well as listen to it on 106.7 The Fan and Caps Radio 24/7.
