The Washington Capitals and Minnesota Wild played an intense game on the second day of 2025 that saw the Wild come out on top in the form of a 4-3 shootout win.
Tom Wilson got the scoring started with his 15th goal of the season as Rasmus Sandin had the set up with his 12th of the season at 10:19 of the opening period. Ryan Hartman at even strength and Yakov Trenin on the shorthander would answer it for the Wild as they took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. Washington outshot Minnesota 13-11.
In the second period Alex Ovechkin would tie the game on the power play at 15:08 with his 18th goal of the season as Dylan Strome would record the assist for his 30th of the season. The tally put Ovi at 871 in his career with only 23 more goals to go to tie Wayne Gretzky.
Shots were even at seven in the second period as the score was tied at two apiece. In the third Martin Fehervary struck for his first of the season at 5:34 as Pierre-Luc Dubois had the assist for his 24th of the season.
Marco Rossi would tie it at 11:19. The Wild outshot the Caps 14-10 in the third and both teams got off a shot in overtime as the Wild led in shots overall 33-31. Nobody scored in that overtime so the game would head to a shootout.
In the shootout round Dylan Strome, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Alex Ovechkin all got stopped Mats Zuccarello got stopped as well for the Wild by Charlie Lindgren but the Wild picked up a goal by Matt Boldy to win the game and secure the two points. Caps come away with one out of a possible two.
Next up for the Caps is a nationaly televised game this Saturday at noon from Capital One Arena as Washington will host the New York Rangers on ABC and ESPN plus.
