The Washington Capitals were edged 3-2 in overtime as the Montreal Canadiens won their ninth try in 11 contests.
In the first at 2:56 on the power play Jakob Chychrun blasted one home for his 12th of the season. The Habs led the Caps in shots 7-6 after one but the Caps led the contest 1-0.
In the second period the Habs struck twice. First it was Cole Caufield for his 23rd of the season and Josh Anderson for his seventh on the shorthander. Those came at 4:56 and 13:22. 2-1 would be the score after two as the Caps were outshot 13-4 in the second.
Lars Eller would tie it in the third at 1:54 for his eighth goal of the season. Ethen Frank had the primary assist as he notched his first NHL point in his League debut. Taylor Raddysh had the secondary for his 14th.
Washington had the edge in shots 8-7 in the third period but the game would require overtime. The Caps were unable to get a shot in 3 on 3 play as they were outshot 2-0 in overtime and were outshot 30-17 overall. Nick Suzuki would end it at 1:15 for his 13th goal of the season as Montreal left the building with two points instead of Washington.
Lars Eller spoke after the game via Harvey Valentine of NHL.com:
"It's good to get points for sure, and good teams are finding ways to get points when they're maybe not at their best. But you also have to be aware that there are some things that aren't good enough, and sometimes points can mask that a little bit. So, we can't fall into that trap. We have to keep pushing ourselves to be better and I know we will. "Lars Eller
In the middle of the contest Charlie Lindgren left the game with an upper body injury at 2:29 of the second period, stopping all nine shots in the cage prior. Caps had to go with Logan Thompson the rest of the way. Lindgren got the injury in a collision with Suzuki in th ecrease 16 seconds into the period.
Next up for the Caps is an 8 p.m. eastern game on Saturday night against the Nashville Predators on Monumental Sports Network.
