The Washington Capitals have re-signed goaltender Logan Thompson to six year deal worth $5.85 million in average annual value or AAV for short. It was confiremd by Sportnet's Elliotte Friedman of Sportnet reported on Monday afternoon on X.
Thompson or LT for short is having an incredible season as he's 22-2-3 with a .925 save perentage and a 2.09 goals against average along with two shutouts. @JFreshHockey broke down more advanced stats as his projected WAR is 78 percent while the 27 year old also is excellent at even strength at 85 percent, quality starts with 87 percent, a 27 percent penalty kill, 28 percent excellent starts, 70 percent bad starts, 43 percent rebound control and 38 percent consistency.
Thompson also has 68 percent high danger, 83 percent medium danger and 50 percent low danger chances. Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post would confirm the reports as well.
Here's Kevin Weekes of ESPN who also would confirm the report.
Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network would add per Sportlogiq that Thompson ranks second in goals against average at 2.09, goals saved above average at 1.02 while ranking third in save percentage at .930. He's first in slot save percentage at .890. He's also fifth in the league in inner slot save percentage at .825. LT is also third in the league in quality starts with 22 and 12th in the league in steals with 33.
This was huge for the Caps and we all knew this was coming with the season he's been having. He's already in the topic of conversation for Vezina Trophy and the Caps didn't spend a lot per year for LT's crease. This could, key word could, allow them to also re-sign Charlie Lindgren if they choose to go that route.
But it looks like with this latest contract extension that the net will belong to LT for the foreseeable future. He's expected to get the nod in net tomorrow night when the Capitals take on the Calgary Flames at 9 p.m. tomorrow night.
The extension also really marks the first big move of the Chris Patrick era after Brian MacLellan had a successful decade as GM of the Capitals.
