Washington Capitals make the right move by calling up Ivan Miroshnichneko

Called up from the Hershey Bears in the wake of the Alex Ovechkin injury news and before the Wasington Capitals hit the ice for practice Wednesday

With Alex Ovechkin heading to injured reserve on the condition of week to week, the Washington Capitals recalled Ivan Miroshnichenko. The 20 year old was taken in the 2022 NHL Draft.

The hot Caps prospect spent the 2021-22 season wih Omskie Krylia and recorded 16 points with 10 goals and six assists in 31 games while also captaining Russsia to the Gold Medal at the 2021 Hlinka Gretzky Cup where he recorded nine points with four goals and five assists in those five games.

Those nine points during the tournament ranked fourth among all skaters and his +7 plus/minus rating tied for second. He also represented Russia at the 2021 4 Nations Tournament where he recorded two points in three games with a goal and an assist.

So far this season he has recorded 14 points in 16 games with the Hershey Bears with seven goals and seven assists. The six foot one, 200 pound forward ranks second on the Bears in goals and points and is tied for sixth in the AHL in shots with 46.

Miroshnichenko appeared in 21 games with the Capitals last season recording six points with two goals and four assists. He made his NHL debut on Dec. 20 against the New York Islanders and made his Stanley Cup playoff debu on April 26 at the New York Rangers, becoming the first member of his draft class to appear in a playoff game.

In the AHL that year with the Bears he played in 47 regular season games and led the Bears rookeis in points with 25, assists with 16, power play goals with two, points per game with 0.53 and a plus/minus rating of +15. He added 12 points with seven goals and five assists in 20 playoff games during Hershey's run to their 13th Calder Cup championship, ranking tied for second in goals and third in points among AHL rookies.

In other positive Caps news, Ryan Leonard had two goals last night for Boston College to defeat Providence in overtime which included the game winning goal. He was the Caps eighth overall pick in 2022.
