Washington Capitals slide into first place with a win in New Jersey

Washington Capitals win 6-5 behind a big third period to catapult to first place in the Metropolitan Division

The Washington Capitals stunned the New Jersey Devils in Newark once again by a final of 6-5. The season series in the 82 game slate finished at 2-2 apeice with the road team winning each time and last night was no different.

Andrew Mangiapane scored his sixth of the season at the 6:19 mark to give the Caps a 1-0 lead off feeds from Hendrix Lapierre and John Carlson. Nico Hishier tied it at 10:54 and 1-1 would be the score after the opening period. Caps had the edge in shots in the opening 20 17-5.

Justin Dowling gave the Devils the brief lead at 2:38. Then the Caps turned it on thanks to the power play. Connor McMichael struck at 9:49 with Pierre Luc-Dubois and John Carlson assisting there. It was McMichael's 14th of the season. Jakob Chychrun gave the Caps the lead at 10:56 with his eighth of the season at 10:56 assisted by Lars Eller and Rasmus Sandin.

Then Washington got another power play goal, this time from Rasmus Sandin from Ivan Miroshnichnenko at 19:47 in the second period. The Devils would get a power play goal of their own from Stefan Nosen at 2:03 in the third then Jesper Bratt followed up to tie it at 4:15. Taylor Raddysh then struck at the 13:54 mark for his fourth of the season. Martin Fehervery and John Carlson assisted there.

Pierre-Luc Doubis would put a stamp on it at 14:04 for his third goal of the season with assists from Aliaksei Protas and Raddysh. Stefan Noesen would add a power play goal of his own at 16:45 but by then it wasn't enough.

Caps had the edge in shots 10-8 overall in the second while the Devils had the edge in shots 14-5 in the third period. Caps would have the edge overall 32-27. Washington had a 60 percent edge on the power play as they went three for five for 60 percent while New Jersey went two for three for 66.7 percent.

Charlie Lindgren made 22 saves off 27 shots for an .815 save percentage. Washington moves into first place in the Metropolitan Division with a 17-6-1 record for 35 points. Caps will be back in action on Tuesday Dec. 3 against the San Jose Sharks at Capital One Arena with the puck dropping at 7 p.m. on Monumental Sports Network.
