Nicklas Backstrom

As we mentioned before it was a week driven by the Capitals first line. Backstrom had 3 points this week and two of those points were goals both coming in the game Saturday night against the Vegas Golden Knights. It’s been a pretty quiet season for Backstrom so far this season. While he still is putting up points lets hope this week is his coming out party for the season.

Of the eighteen Capitals who played this week only six players had a Corsi% over 50%. Backstrom was one of those players and his Corsi% was 55.77%. Unfortunately the shot attempts didn’t turn into scoring chances as much, with Backstrom on the ice the Capitals had 11 chances for and 14 against. That gives him a 44% scoring chance percentage.

He did have five individual scoring chances however which was near the top for the team this week. Three players tied for the team lead this week with six, Kuznetsov, Ovechkin and Oshie. Backstrom was also second in individual high danger attempts with three behind only Kuznetsov and Oshie who both had four.

I think the Capitals honestly need more from Nicklas Backstrom this season. While it’s good he’s contributing offensively there’s too many nights were I don’t notice one of the Caps star players. If that continues to happen it could spell trouble when the games get more important and tighter.

But we’ll worry about that later. Right now, Backstrom is putting up points and was one of the few players to put up both points and was noticeable this past week. For that he should be one of our stars of the week.
