Alex Ovechkin

Two thirds of the top line make our stars of the week this go around and I think deservedly so. There was only two games so it was a small sample size and that line was the only good line in one of the games. They put up goals and points and it’s no different for the Capitals captain Ovechkin.

Ovechkin, like Backstrom, had three points this week and two of the three points were goals. Also like Backstrom those two goals came in the same game. Backstrom scoring his two vs Vegas, Ovechkin potting his two in Florida.

It should be pointed out that the aging Ovechkin is not really close to slowing down. He still looks great on the ice and oh yeah, he’s on pace for nearly 60 goals. The dude is 34 years old and a month into the season he is on pace for almost 60 goals. That. Is. Crazy.

Ovechkin was also one of the six Capitals to post a positive Corsi number with a percentage of 58.82%. While on the ice the Capitals had 11 scoring chances for and 11 against. He was the leader in high danger Corsi%  by a pretty big margin this week, he had a 71.43%. Second on the team was Nic Dowd who had a 66.67%.

As we noted earlier Ovechkin was one of three players who tied for the team lead in individual scoring chances with six. He also led the team in shots, shocking I know, with 14. The next highest total was nine by John Carlson.

It was a great week for the Capitals number one line and a good week for the captain Alex Ovechkin. For his good week I think he is deserving of a spot on our stars of the week.

Those were the most noticeable players who also put up good stats. Some other players had some good numbers but weren’t as noticeable and I think for that reason they should get an honorable mention. Evgeny Kuznetsov had five points this week, had six individual scoring chances and drew two penalties this week.

John Carlson also had five points and had good advanced stats. His Corsi% was 59.32% and his scoring chance% was 56.52%. All good, but not as noticeable as the top three this week.

T.J. Oshie I thought was also very good this week. He’s been quiet this season but was noticeable this week. The reason he wasn’t one of my three choices was his lack of production this week having just one point. He did draw 3 penalties in the two games though which led the team.
