#1 Will Alex Ovechkin still be impactful or will his game decline?

The number one question going on around Washington isn’t political but rather can Alex Ovechkin catch Wayne Gretzky’s unbreakable goal scoring record.

The scary part is we’re not only in the middle of a pandemic but we’re wasting valuable time in the Ovi chase with no hockey going on right now. Thankfully a 56 game season is better than 48 and buys him more time.

Ovechkin is not only entering a contract year where all eyes will be on him but also just turned 35 in September. Still even though he is getting up in age I wouldn’t bet against the great eight.

Ovechkin is coming off a 48 goal season that would’ve been over 50 if the season wasn’t shutdown due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. The previous year he scored 51 and the year before that added 49. He is coming off the achievement of scoring 700 goals and has 706 so far in his career.

If we’re going off the sample size of a 56 game season, if Ovechkin can score 48 in 69 games, he can at least get 35 in the span of 56 games. That would get him close with hopefully an 82 game season the next year after he signs a contract extension with the Caps.
