#1 Jonathan Bernier

It’s going to be an interesting next couple of days in Washington as we wait and see what the Caps will do at the trade deadline. One of the popular topics will be whether the Caps should or shouldn’t add a veteran netminder. Doing so might mean a tough decision will have to be made between Ilya Samsonov and Vitek Vanecek.

Jonathan Bernier is a veteran who spent time with five teams over the course of 13 seasons. He’s enjoying his best season since playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2013-14, his first as a starter. He has done good despite playing on the league’s second worst team.

Bernier leads the league with a .750 quality starts percentage among goalies with more than five starts, via Hockey Reference. That is good on the surface but there are still concerns.

For one, he suffered a soft tissue lower body injury during a game last month. He has also started just five postseason games with a bad .885 save percentage. So you’ve got a questionable postseason history as well as knowing he played on a team as bad as the Detroit Red Wings. Plus there’s that brief injury he suffered recently.
