#2 Alex Ovechkin

Alex Ovechkin got the scoring started at 11:58 in the second. Ovechkin was lurking by the net and finished off a nifty no look backhanded pass from Dmitry Orlov. It was his 19th goal of the season which ranks second in the NHL as well as the 749th of his career. The goal extended his point streak to five games. In that stretch he has scored seven goals and four assists.

Ovechkin is now 17 goals away from number 3 Jaromir Jagr, 52 away from Gordie Howe and 145 away from Wayne Gretzky.

Ovechkin has 19 goals and 18 assists for 37 points this season. His 37 points in 22 games ranks second in the NHL. In addition, Ovechkin has recorded 24 points at five on five which ranks first in the NHL (11 goals, 13 assists).

Ovechkin has seven goals in his past five games and four goals in his past two games including a Hat Trick on Black Friday against the Florida Panthers.

I think the question at this point is not if but when Ovechkin will break the record. Unfortunately, CJ is right, if there were no lockouts perhaps Ovechkin would have been even closer or already broken it by now. By the way as we were typing this, Ovechkin took home the NHL’s First Star of the Week. Congrats to the great eight.
