It was hard to really pick who would be the easiest opponents the Caps would face from here on out this month. I hated that I went with the Stars who now have Braden Holtby but the San Jose Sharks, Boston Bruins, Winnipeg Jets, Vancouver Canucks and the Vegas Golden Knights each pose bigger challenges than the Stars do.

The Caps rarely beat the Stars… on home ice. In fact I can’t even remember the last time they did. But the road matchup might be a more level playing field. The Stars are 18-13-2 with 38 points, good for sixth in the Central Division.

As for Holtby, it’ll be good to see him again but it won’t be as emotional until the Stars come to the District. In 17 games this season, he’s 6-8-1 with a 2.56 goals against average and a .920 save percentage. Both are improvements from his previous season with the Canucks.

The Stars have Joe Pavelski who’s a year older than Alex Ovechkin but having a good season with 15 goals and 20 assists for 35 points. As far as former Caps go, the Stars also have former Capital Michael Raffl.

This game is the final one in the month of January and we’ll know by then if they were able to come out of their slump or not.
