John Carlson for Dougie Hamilton

This is highly unlikely for two reasons. The first being that they’re worth the same in terms of cap hit and the second being that the New Jersey Devils are trending too upward to gamble on veterans with a young team up there.

But Carlson is from New Jersey and that would be a good homecoming. Dougie Hamilton is also 28 and fits the bill for exactly what the Capitals are looking for. They need a young defenseman with upside off the puck. That’s what Hamilton provides and if the Caps can’t go for him they got to go for somebody of that caliber.

Hamilton had nine goals and 21 assists for 30 points in his first season with the Devils. The Carolina Hurricanes were ridiculous in giving him up. He also had decent advanced stats.

Per Natural Stat Trick, Hamilton had a Corsi For percentage of 51.77 percent, an Expected Goals For percentage of 49.53 percent and a High Danger Chances For percentage of a whooping 58.03 percent.

Those are three blockbuster trades for John Carlson. It isn’t likely any of these will happen but it was fun dreaming. Who would you straight up make a bold trade for on the Capitals to shake up the roster and inject some youth into it for a better outcome next season?
