Next up on our Washington Capitals end of season player report cards we look at the season of Trevor van Riemsdyk. It was a good season that earned him a three year contract extension which will carry an average annual value (AAV) of $3 million.

He earned this contract after a career season that saw him score a career high seven goals, tie a career high with 16 assists which comes out to a career high 23 points. He had a plus minus of plus 10 while averaging 19:04 minutes of ice time. He had 160 blocked shots and 21 hits.

van Riemsdyk’s Corsi For percentage at five on five came out to 51.12 percent, his Expected Goals For percentage came out to 52.38 percent, and his High Danger Chances For came out to 55.19 percent, via Natural Stat Trick.

By re signing TvR, the Capitals top four defenseman consist of him, Nick Jensen, John Carlson and Rasmus Sandin for next season. They also re upped Alex Alexeyev, signed a new young defenseman and are eyeing extending Martin Fehervary.

He was he third player the Caps extended a contract to around the deadline after they re upped Dylan Strome and Sonny Milano a month ago. They also re signed Jensen and Nicolas Aube Kubel.

This breakout season for TvR came in large part due to being thrust into a bigger role as a result of December’s John Carlson injury. The Middletown, New Jersey, native stepped up and as a result played more minutes. Carlson’s slapshot to the head injury was as gruesome and gnarly as it gets but at least he’s okay now.

Grade A+: If I had to give an offensive and defensive MVP award for the Caps, TvR has my vote as defensive MVP. He led the team in blocked shots by 32 with Nick Jensen just under him.
