The Washington Capitals have one of the best goaltenders in the league in Logan Thompson, while having a decent backup in Charlie Lindgren. However, some fans seem to think the team would be better off trying to upgrade on Lindgren.

While it was revealed that the Capitals won’t be looking to trade Lindgren, maybe they go a different route and try to add some internal competition, bringing in a goaltender on a professional tryout (PTO) in training camp.

One name that comes to mind as a potential fit is Connor Ingram, who spent last season with the Edmonton Oilers.

Ingram, who is 29 years old, played 32 games last season, winning 16 of them, posting two shutouts, with a 2.60 goals-against-average (GAA) and a .899 save percentage (SV%).

Lindgren, who is 32 years old, played 21 games last season, winning nine of them, posting one shutout, with a 3.52 GAA and a .879 SV%.

Ingram posted a +1.7 goals-saved-above-expected (GSAX) last season, while Lindgren posted a -5.3 GSAX.

Ingram isn’t the perfect goaltender by any means, nor would he move the needle, but he might be a slight upgrade on Lindgren. If he is willing to come in on a PTO and sign for league minimum, he could be a good, low-risk addition for the Capitals.

There is a world where the Capitals give Clay Stevenson every chance to earn the backup role next season, but they might be looking for more of a guarantee between the pipes as they try to push for a Stanley Cup in what could be Alex Ovechkin's final season.

Bringing in Ingram to back up Thompson would be an upgrade, but the Capitals will likely factor in how important Lindgren is for Thompson.

The Capitals could also run a 3-goalie tandem next season, which could be stronger if they add Ingram, and allow Stevenson and Ingram to battle it out in training camp.
