Capitals should make an offer to this Metro division rival

With the Columbus Blue Jackets potentially trading their star winger, the Capitals should look into acquiring him.

The Washington Capitals have been busy on the trade front so far this offseason, trading for Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch. So, while the Capitals have gotten some of the big names on the trade board, there is another winger that the Capitals could add to their roster. That winger is Kirill Marchenko. Marchenko played in 76 games in the 2025-26 season, registering 27 goals and 40 assists for 67 points.

While Marchenko is attracting significant interest from other teams around the league, the Capitals could go after him. The only question would be what the Capitals would have to give to the Jackets in exchange for Marchenko. With the Jackets potentially losing Werenski and Marchenko, they could be in a position to rebuild or retool their team, and the Capitals could focus more on trading draft picks for Marchenko rather than roster players.

With the Capitals having a strong prospect pool, they may also be willing to trade one of their prospects. What makes this potential deal so important for the Capitals is that Marchenko is only 25, and with the Capitals having a mix of older and younger players, Marchenko will benefit the Capitals now and in the future. If the Capitals have the option to make a deal for Marchenko, they should take it. If Ovechkin does decide to come back, the Capitals' wingers will be scary come the start of the 2026-27 season, with Jordan Kyrou, Alex Tuch, Tom Wilson, Alex Ovechkin, and Kirill Marchenko.

Overall, if the Capitals can make a deal for Marchenko, they should, but they should also make sure not to lose any valuable prospect players in the process. But in the long run, the Capitals organization would benefit now and in the future if they pursue Kirill Marchenko.
