Part of coaching is being active in the community and Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery today took in Commanders training camp practice ahead of the NFL season. Scott Abraham of ABC 7 News DC tweeted out a pic from Commanders Park in Ashburn, Virginia.

Carbery recently spoke to NHL.com's Tom Gulitti about his beleif in Alex Ovechkin breaking Wayne Gretzky's record as the season is 50 days away beginning tomorrow.

""Do I think he can score 42 goals this year? Yes, I do. I absolutely think he's capable of that.""

Dylan Strome also spoke to NHL.com about Ovechkin in a story that came out today. With 41 away from tying, Ovechkin has scored 40 goals or more in 13 of his 19 NHL seasons. Despite starting last season with just eight goals in his first 43 games, he finished the season with 23 goals in his final 36 games.

Strome commended Ovi's work ethic to NHL.com's Dave McCarthy:

""It was impressive. You can't count a guy out like that. He has one of, if not the best shots in the NHL. There's a few guys with really good shots but he's in the top five in my opinion. I see it every day. Any time a guy can shoot like that it's up to the guys around him to get him the puck and that's what we're trying to do.""

Lots of folks counted the Caps out in the thick of adversity but not us. The Caps went 18-13-5 in their final 36 games going from seventh in the Metropolitan Division on Feb. 9 to a playoff spot.

Strome added this:

""Lot's of people counted us out last year. For (the younger guys) who hadn't made the playoffs much, it kind of felt like what you were doing during the regular season was worth it. I've played almost 500 games in the NHL and had never made the playoffs before besides the bubble (in 2020) and we were the 12h seed in the bubble, so I don't feel like that even really counts. It meant what you are doing is working and we just need to keep going at it.""

Strome's referring to his time with the Chicago Blackhawks. This goes back to Carbery. He believed in the guys when other folks didn't. Dan Quinn and the Commanders hopefully were inspired with Carbery's presense at their camp before Caps training camp gets underway.
