Washington Capitals fall 2-1 to the Vancouver Canucks

The Washington Capitals almost came back against the Vancouver Canucks but it wasn't enough

The Washington Capitals fell 2-1 to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night. Both Canucks goals were scored by Quinn Hughes. Piere-Luc Dubois would get the Caps only goal.

Hughes scored at 12:23 in the first period and then again at 1:24 in the second period to put the Canucks up 2-0 through two periods. The Canucks outshot the Caps 13-12 in the first period while the Caps outshot the Canucks 11-8 in the second period.

Pierre-Luc Dubois struck in the third period for his 10th goal of the season at 12:31. Aliaksei Protas picked up his 21st assist of the season while Connor McMichael tacked on his 19th. In case you missed it, we mentioned them in our fantasy preview.

The Caps outshot Vancouver 10-4 in the third period and 33-25 overall. Charlie Lindgren would get the start in goal and although he fell he still made 23 saves. With the loss it was the Caps first regulation loss in the calendar year of 2025 and it also snapped their 12 game point streak.

Both teams went 0 for 2 on the power play in six split penalty minutes. The Caps had the edge in face off percentage 54.5 percent to 45.5 percent. The Canucks outhit the Caps 26-15 and out blocked them 19-15. Caps had 19 giveaways compared to the Canucks 15 and the Canucks had four takeaways compared to the Capials three. The season series concludes wih a 1-1 split both scores being a 2-1 margin. Lindgren also made this out of this world save right here with his catching clove.

Alex Ovechkin finished with a game high seven shots but he still stands 20 goals behind from breaking Wayne Gretzky's NHL record. He told the media after the game:

"I think we have pretty good chances. Obviously, the goalie played well and you can see at the end, we just missed execution. Puck was bobbling, bouncing but it was a good battle. We fight till the end. "

Next up for the Caps is a Tuesday night road game agains the Calgary Flames. Puck drop is at 9 p.m. on Monumental Sports Network.
