When the Washington Capitals pulled off a trade with the St. Louis Blues to acquire Jordan Kyrou, it caught quite a few fans off guard, but it was a pleasant surprise knowing the team was focused on adding firepower in hopes of pushing for a Stanley Cup.Â
Kyrou is a phenomenal addition for the Capitals, and there didn’t seem to be much negative pushback from fans, but while he is likely going to be one of their leading scorers in the 2026-27 season, some fans did question who they gave up in return.Â
Last season, Kyrou scored 18 goals and added 28 assists for 46 points through 72 games. While that doesn’t seem impressive, it was his worst offensive season since the 2020-21 season. Over the last five seasons, he has reached at least 67 points, reaching at least 70 in the other four.Â
Connor McMichael, a promising young forward who scored 14 goals and added 32 assists for 46 points through 78 games last season with the Capitals, was part of the return going back to the Blues.Â
The Capitals had selected him 25th overall in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, and he scored 67 goals and added 87 assists for 154 points through 315 games during his tenure with them.Â
Recently, the Blues announced that they had signed McMichael to a massive six-year extension worth $6.75 million annually, banking on his potential to become a staple in their middle-six forward group, while hoping their investment in young guns can help them become contenders in the next couple of seasons.
The Capitals did add a game-changer in Kyrou, but the question has to be asked: Will they regret trading McMichael? The short answer is no, as long as Kyrou fits in well with them and provides the production they’re expecting out of him, but there is always a chance McMichael finally explodes offensively and makes the Capitals look silly for trading him.Â
