#2 A fight night turned hat trick like no other

On May 5 toward the tail end of the 2021 pandemic shortened season, the Caps took on the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden and the rivalry between the Caps and Rangers would soar to new heights. Thanks to some fireworks between Tom Wilson and Artemi Panarin two nights prior, the stage was set for an epic rematch.

There was a forward line brawl right after the puck was dropped. There was a combined 100 penalty minutes in just the first period alone and 141 total. But the Caps kept their composure and found a way to win thanks to T.J. Oshie playing with a heavy heart.

Nic Dowd told the media after the game:

"“It’s such an emotional night for T.J. He has been such a good leader for our team, and we are trying to be there for him and take care of him, and he ends up taking care of us.”"

Oshie took care of the Caps in a big way as he delivered on a hat trick just after the passing of his father Tim “Coach” Oshie. It was easily the best Caps win of the season last season with all the emotions and everything.
