The Washington Capitals extended Alex Ovechkin on a new one-year contract, and it might be the final season that we see one of the best hockey players of all time lace up his skates. With that being said, he hasn't closed the door on a return past the end of the 2026-27 season, and it seems as though he is open to pushing for the 1000-goal milestone.
In an interview with Match TV, Ovechkin was asked if he wanted to score 1,000 career regular-season goals. "We’ll try,” Ovechkin said. He continued, "Everything will depend on my desire and health. Time will tell. It gets harder and harder with each passing year."
Ovechkin mentioned that the biggest hurdle in terms of trying to reach that milestone is his age and everything that comes with getting older. "I don’t really enjoy training," Ovechkin added.
Ovechkin made it clear that his goal in the 2026-27 season is to win a Stanley Cup with the Capitals, rather than individual accomplishments. "A team sport doesn’t depend on just one player, and Washington was a united force in 2018," Ovechkin said. He continued, "I want to win the trophy again. That desire outweighs the possibility of breaking another Gretzky record.”
“The main thing is to have a good team,” Ovechkin had said. “I’m happy with the team as captain; we have a competitive squad. Our goal is the title. I don’t know if I’ll have another season.”
Ovechkin, who is 40 years old, is coming off a solid campaign where he scored 32 goals and added 32 assists for 64 points through 82 games. Throughout his career, he has scored 929 goals and added 758 assists for 1687 points through 1573 games. He is a future first ballot member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, and while he will likely break even more records, he is hoping for nothing more than another Stanley Cup victory before he calls it a career.
