A number of Capitals players could reach significant career milestones this season. Forward Tom Wilson is one of them, with a chance to score his 500th career point mark. Wilson, the Caps alternate captain as well as arguable their best all-around player, has become one of the most feared players in the NHL. With size, speed, skill, and snarl, there is no other player in the NHL that brings to the ice what the Capitals’ alternate captain does each night. About to begin his 14th season, Wilson is one of four Caps (Alex Tuch, Dylan Strome, and Pierre-Luc Dubois) who could reach 500 career points this year. After beginning his career as a fourth line enforcer, Wilson has become a top six forward who can put up 60-plus points and play in any situation on the ice.
Wilson was drafted 16th overall in the 2012 draft, five spots after Filip Forsberg. With nothing left to prove in the minors and forbidden from playing in the AHL due to age restrictions, Wilson made the Caps opening night roster for the 2012-13 season. Wilson displayed playing skills while playing in juniors but made his name in the NHL as a tough guy who skated like a Mack truck and threw punches like a jackhammer. While many labeled him as a goon and was recently ranked 3rd dirtiest player in the NHL by The Hockey News. Wilson worked hard to develop his offensive skills to prove he was not a one-dimensional player.
Wilson size (6 foot 4 inches, 225 lb), skating ability, and physical play allows coaches to play him in any situation on the ice. As his experience grew, Wilson's offense gradually increased to the point where he earned a spot one the Caps top line with Alex Ovechkin. His size, speed, and toughness made him hard to play against, with opposing teams having to constantly be aware of where he was on the ice or risk being flattened by a Wilson check. This created space on the ice for his linemates and made a Wilson line hard to defend no matter where he played on the ice. He scored a career-high 65 points in 2024-25 and followed it up with 62 points this past season. By adding Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch making the Caps lineup, Wilson has a good chance to hit 60 points again this season.
Wilson worked hard to move up from 18-year-old rookie fourth-line enforcer to become a top six forward and one of the league’s best players. He was integral in helping Team Canada reach the Gold Medal Game in the 2026 Winter Olympics and had his name inscribed on the Stanley Cup in 2018. Wilson worked hard to become a more complete hockey player, one whose hard work and dedication has put him within striking distance of 500 career points.
