The Washington Capitals made their first official move when the NHL Free Agency window opened shortly after 12 noon eastern. Meet Garnet Hathaway.

Reported by Pierre LeBrun from The Athletic, Garnet Hathaway is a fourth line forward that can give the Washington Capitals some added depth in the bottom-six. This contract is a four-year deal with an average annual value (AAV) of $1.5 million.

The undrafted right winger spent four seasons with the Calgary Flames and comes off a career season last year with career-highs in goals with 11 and points with 19 while adding 11 assists.

Prior to going pro, Hathaway attended college at Brown University and played hockey for the NCAA Division-1 Brown Bears. He had a strong freshman year in 2010-11 with 14 points (5 goals, 9 assists) in 31 games.

Following an eight-point season in his sophomore year (3 goals, 5 assists), he earned the “A” patch as an assistant captain for his upperclassmen years. His best season came in his junior year with 21 points (6 goals, 15 assists) in 33 games. His college career ended with 15 points (6 goals, 9 assists) in 31 games.

Hathaway played in 121 games total and recorded 46 goals and 50 assists for 96 points. After graduating in 2014, Hathaway signed an AHL contract with the Abbotsford Heat, Calgary’s affiliate. He remained in their system when the Flames’ affiliates relocated to Adriondack, bearing the same name as the NHL club.

Hathaway played eight games to finish out the season in Abbotsford but naturally got more playing time in Adirondack in 2014-15, appearing in 72 games and recording 36 points (19 goals, 17 assists). Those were Hathaway’s career-highs at the AHL level (via EliteProspects).

Hathaway signed with the Flames on April 13, 2015 to a two-year, two-way entry-level contract and spent another season in the AHL. This time the relocation came back to Stockton where Hathaway spent the next three years as an assistant captain while also making a few stops in Calgary.

Hathaway made his NHL debut on Feb. 29, 2016 in a Flames 4-3 defeat to the Philadelphia Flyers. He had three assists in 14 games and played in 26 games during the 2016-17 season recording five points (1 goal, 4 assists).

After a 13-point season (4 goals, 9 assists) in 59 games, Hathaway had his best season in his fourth and final year with Calgary. In addition to the point total, he was a +14, had nine goals at even-strength and even two shorthanded goals.

Next. Capitals sign Richard Panik. dark

One of those goals came on Feb. 1 at Capital One Arena in a 4-3 Capitals win. Hathaway was a standout on the fourth line and is a solid penalty kill addition for a team that needs improvement in that area this upcoming season. Along with re-signing Carl Hagelin and the addition of Richard Panik, that PK should be much tougher.

Update: The Capitals made it official at 1:53 p.m. eastern time on Monday. Garnet Hathaway inked a four-year, $6-million deal with an AAV of $1.5 million.
