The Washington Capitals made one last move at the Trade Deadline to help out their prospect pool. They shipped Christian Djoos out to Anaheim in exchange for Daniel Sprong.

The Washington Capitals lost one of their Stanley Cup champion defensemen who had a hard time making the roster at the start of the season. Christian Djoos has spent the bulk of the season in Hershey. In return they got a former top Penguins prospect.

Daniel Sprong is a native of Amsterdam, Netherlands and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round at the 46th overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. He played in eight games with the Ducks this season recorded two points with a goal and an assist.

Sprong has spent the bulk of the season with the San Diego Gulls and recorded 27 points with 11 goals and 16 assists in 39 games, ranking fourth on the squad in points. He has 30 NHL points in 97 games between Pittsburgh and Anaheim with 19 goals and 11 assists. He has 92 points in 104 NHL games with 43 goals and 49 assists.

Djoos played in just two games with the Capitals this season but has done well in Hershey with 32 points (five goals, 27 assists). He’s suited up in 110 NHL games with the Capitals recording 24 points with four goals and 20 assists.

Djoos was also integral on the Stanley Cup winning Capitals team. He was paired with Brooks Orpik and the rookie and veteran helped balance out an improving defense that helped the Caps taste glory. In that run, Djoos recorded an assist in 22 games.

It is highly unlikely you will see Sprong donning a Capitals red sweater this season. He will report to the Hershey Bears who sit at the top of the Atlantic Division in the AHL with a 33-17-3 record and will be one impact player as they make their push to the Calder Cup playoffs. The Bears can only get better from here.

As for Djoos a change of scenery will help him after he lost out his spot in the lineup in training camp to Jonas Siegenthaler. Maybe he’ll get extended playing time at the NHL level before season’s end but he’ll certainly have a strong chance at making the Ducks next season.
