What an interesting couple of days Washington Capitals fans.

First Alex Ovechkin scored his 700th goal then the Washington Capitals defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins. Then news dropped Sunday night of a trade that rocked the streets of D.C.

The team landed Ilya Kovalchuk and he makes his Caps debut tonight donning the number 17.

He has nine goals this season, three with the Los Angeles Kings before they released him and six with the underachieving Montreal Canadiens before he got traded.

He had the choice between the Boston Bruins and the Caps. Lucky for us, he chose B. He will be on the third line tonight with Carl Hagelin and Lars Eller.

The Caps and the Jets will play in the first of two games this week as part of a home and home. They’ll meet again on Thursday night.

If you have tickets to the game get to the arena early because Alex Ovechkin will be honored for his 700th goal before the game. Against the Jets two years ago, he scored his 600th goal.

The Jets are coming off a Sunday loss to the Buffalo Sabres, who beat the Penguins the previous day and are suddenly on a roll. Their record is 32-27-5 and they sit third in the wild card with 69 points.

Meanwhile the Caps are in first place in the Metropolitan Division thanks to their Sunday win over the Penguins.
