Capitals crush Rangers in our NHL 20 simulation
The Washington Capitals not only beat the New York Rangers in NHL 20. They flat out dominated them.
The Washington Capitals cruised to a 6-2 win over the New York Rangers with several different players stepping up.
The Capitals struck first three minutes into the game on a goal by T.J. Oshie for his 22nd of the season. It came on a shot from outside the right face-off circle. Dmitry Orlov and Evgeny Kuznetsov had the helpers.
It was a rather clean first period with no penalties coming from either side. Shots were even at six apiece and the Caps outhit the Rangers 5-2. The Rangers won seven of the 10 face-off draws.

The Caps doubled their lead four minutes into the second period thanks to Norris Trophy frontrunner John Carlson off a quick pass from Alex Ovechkin. Oshie was credited with the secondary assist and it was Carlson’s fifth goal of the season.
The Caps didn’t stop there. At 12:39 they made it 3-0 thanks to Richard Panik rebounding an Ovechkin shot off of the blockers of Henrik Lundqvist right in front of the net. Lars Eller had the secondary assist.
3-0 Washington was the score after two periods with the Caps leading in shots 18-9 and in hits 12-5. The Rangers were 12-4 on the face-off dot.
The third period provided plenty of scoring. A blast from Orlov pinged on the goal post and went in at 3:52 to make it 4-0. Tom Wilson and Braden Holtby had the helpers.
The Rangers wouldn’t quit, however, as Mika Zibenejad would get them on the board. The Rangers would later get a power play opportunity when Wilson was called for hooking at 15:22 but the Caps were able to kill it off.
Artemi Panarin would later dent the twine at 18:29 to make it a two-goal deficit and make things a little nerve-wracking the rest of the way. Well until the Caps responded with a quick empty net goal a minute later after they pulled their netminder.
It came on a backhander from Jakub Vrana for his 29th goal of the season and if that wasn’t enough, Wilson put the game away 10 seconds later to complete the 6-2 rout.
