Capitals: Wayne Gretzky and Alex Ovechkin tie in NHL 20
On Wednesday night, Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin and Wayne Gretzky went head to head in NHL 20.
The two are the greatest to ever play the game and on Wednesday night the Washington Capitals superstar took on an NHL icon in a video game in the name of charity. In addition to gaming, Alex Ovechkin and Wayne Gretzky helped raise money for novel coronavirus relief and then matched the donations themselves.
Ovechkin and Gretzky each won a game in NHL 20 and then mutually called it a tie. Gretzky took the first game while Ovechkin won the second. Gretzky was joined by his son Ty in the first game with his other son Trevor taking over in the second game. Ovechkin was joined by John Wayne of Caps Gaming and the event was streamed on the Capitals Twitch channel.
The first game featured Gretzky scoring the game’s first goal. They were on their way to a 4-3 win until Ovechkin tied it with 2.8 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. In addition to the game action we were able to see Ovechkin and Gretzky’s faces playing the game and Ovi’s reaction to that game tying goal was priceless. Team Gretzky got the win in overtime.

After the second game was delayed after several people tried to get online and join their game. Ovechkin struck first in Game 2 and never looked back.
The second game lasted two periods with Ovechkin and the Capitals cruising their way to a 4-1 win calling it a tie for both parties.
The real highlight of the night was the amount of money they raised. Their goal was initially $10,000. They broke that before Game 1 could end.
In the end, they raised over $20,000 and the Ovechkin and Gretzky families matched the donations to push that total to $41,041.67. The money will go towards the Monumental Sports and Entertainment Foundation’s “Feeding the Frontlines” as well as the Edmonton Food Bank.

The real winners last night were the fans who donated money and it’s great to see Ovechkin and Gretzky come together to raise money and put a smile on our faces as we go through this tough time without hockey.
