Happy Birthday to Captain, the Washington Capitals team dog!

Captain officially turns one today and we should all celebrate as Washington Capitals fans as we’re very fortunate to have the best dog and the goodest boy representing us. He was so well received by the hockey community that he won Best Team Dog in the NHL Fan Choice Awards.

For those of us who followed Captain all year we were lucky enough to see him grow. First from his debut as a little puppy being escorted on the Rock the Red carpet with Alex Ovechkin to his almost daily Twitter updates, Captain has grown up a lot in his first year.

Captain was introduced to us on that red carpet and he got to attend his first hockey game that night against the Carolina Hurricanes. Later on in October he got to take part in the Canine Calendar photoshoot. He was the star.

He also killed it on Halloween, wearing several different consumers including Olaf from Disney’s Frozen, Captain America, The Incredibles, Jaws and more.

Captain also was the star in the team’s annual Christmas card, singing Mariah Carey’s All I want for Christmas is you. All we wanted for Christmas was Captain and there was also an adorable video of him checking out the holiday decorations around the city.

Captain got a great late Christmas present when he met Matt Nelson, the creator of We Rate Dogs. He was rated an outstanding 14/10 and was “an honor to pet”.

In January he made friends with the New York Islanders team dog which is where this top picture came from. Captain met Tori and got bragging rights as the Caps came back to win 6-4. Monumental Sports and Entertainment also acquired a second service dog in training named Scout and they became instant best buds.

Captain would later get crowned the Best Team Dog at the NHL Fan Choice Awards, leading the charge in what was a successful showing for the Caps as a team. We had no doubt Captain was going to win and made sure that we did our part in voting him in.

Soon Captain will go to a veteran or first responder and that’s what he’s been training for in the meantime. He’ll be missed among the Caps but he’ll certainly be in good hands and the vet who takes him home will be lucky to have him.
