The NHL has fined Alex Ovechkin for a hit to the family jewels that I, unfortunately, cannot defend. It was only $5,000 but it was a necessary fine. The victim was Trent Frederic of the Boston Bruins and the punishment was issued by the NHL Department of Player Safety.

This play occurred in the third period with both players receiving penalties. The Caps won the game in a shootout with the final score 2-1. Both players had beef earlier in the game when Frederic wanted to drop the gloves with the great eight. Ovechkin declined.

Ovechkin didn’t score in the game but certainly made his presence felt. With seven goals on the season he needs to focusing on scoring and winning and not taking it to a player Eric Cartman style.

A $5,000 fine which is the maximum from the CBA, is like 10 bucks for a guy like Ovechkin. Speaking of money, he’ll be due a raise in the offseason or sooner if he wants to finish his career as a member of the Caps. That is for another piece.

The third period was where all the action was in the game. After David Pastrnak put the Bruins up 1-0, the Caps tied it minutes later thanks to Lars Eller. Vitek Vanecek led the way in net and the defense played solid enough to protect him and keep the score tied through the overtime.

Nobody scored in the shootout except for Jakub Vrana, his goal saving the night and sealing the win for the Caps which is now their fourth win in a row. Vanecek stopped Brad Marchand on the other side for the exclamation point.

Thankfully for Ovechkin, he was hit with just a fine and not a suspension. But here’s what I don’t understand. How does Ovechkin get fined when guys like Sidney Crosby make similar plays (like he did to someone’s groin a couple seasons ago), and don’t get hit with anything?
