The Washington Capitals have made their first move prior to the trade deadline. They have sent Jonas Siegenthaler to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a 2021 third round draft pick.

Siegenthaler barely got playing time with the Caps this season with their blue line being crowded. He was a regular in the lineup in 2018-19 and played a decent amount of games last season.

The 23 year old defensemen played in seven games with the Caps this season. Listed as six foot three and 211 pounds, Siegenthaler has recorded 13 points with two goals and 11 assists in 97 career games with the Caps. He was drafed in the second round at 57th overall in the 2015 NHL Draft.

The Caps will now have seven picks in the 2021 NHL Draft. The Caps own their first, second, fourth, fifth, and sixth round picks as well as the Arizona Coyotes third round pick and the Vegas Golden Knights fifth round pick.

The Caps had a choice between Siegenthaler and Christian Djoos last season. They ultimately choose Siegs and sent Djoos to the Anaheim Ducks for Daniel Sprong.

I get why this move had to happen but at the same time I feel like this year was a waste in the young defenseman’s development. Now he gets a better opportunity on a young New Jersey Devils team that will be rebuilding and looking to be a threat in a couple of years.

Siegenthaler’s cap hit is $800,000 so the Caps have a little bit of money to spend at the upcoming trade deadline which ends tomorrow at 3 p.m. I imagine trading Siegenthaler won’t be the only move the Caps make in the next 24 hours.
